Grad Studio III - Fall 2010 | Elderly Housing Campus
Project Length - 5 Weeks
Focus -
Redevelopment of I-95
This housing project embraces the freedom of retirement while providing comfortable support facilities to aid the residents in their daily routine. The project is responsive to site and local context. By reacting to the three major local elements (the river, the hill to the east and Wickenden Street), the project is sculpted to embrace these elements. Taking advantage of river views the housing levels rise to create a visual contention while still maintaining porosity. Within the units themselves, residents have the option of supported living through adjacencies that allow for kitchens and laundry rooms of two units to be shared. This gives residents the option to support one another by combining daily tasks with that of their neighbors. This is then amplified throughout the program with moments of rest that grow in size as you move through the building. The weaving landscape elements aid in the support of relaxation as well as gray water collection. The program was also expanded to include workout facilities, small grocery store, cafe and a continuing education center.
